What does this GPA Calculator do?

Grade Point Average (GPA) converts your letter grades into a single number, typically on a 4.0 scale, that summarizes your overall academic performance. Because different courses carry different credit hours, a simple average of your grade points would unfairly treat a 1-credit elective the same as a 4-credit core class. This calculator does the credit-weighted math for you across three courses.

The formula

GPA = (Σ grade points × credit hours) ÷ (Σ credit hours)

In plain terms: multiply each course's grade point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on, though many schools use finer increments like 3.3 or 3.7) by its number of credit hours, add those products together, then divide by the total number of credit hours across all courses.

Step-by-step example

Say you took three courses: an A (4.0) worth 3 credits, a B+ (3.3) worth 3 credits, and an A− (3.7) worth 4 credits.

Quality points: (4.0 × 3) + (3.3 × 3) + (3.7 × 4) = 12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 = 36.7
Total credits: 3 + 3 + 4 = 10

  • Always weight by credit hours — averaging raw grade points without weighting will give a misleading GPA if your course loads vary in size.

Why credit-weighting matters so much

Consider a student who gets an A (4.0) in a 1-credit seminar but a C (2.0) in a 4-credit core course. A naive, unweighted average of those two grades would be (4.0 + 2.0) ÷ 2 = 3.0. But credit-weighted GPA correctly reflects that the C in the larger course should count for more: (4.0×1 + 2.0×4) ÷ 5 = 12 ÷ 5 = 2.4 — a full 0.6 lower than the naive average, and a much more honest reflection of the student's semester.

This is exactly why GPA calculations always need both a grade and a credit-hour value for each course — a grade alone is an incomplete picture of academic performance.

Converting letter grades to grade points

Most US institutions use a 4.0 scale where A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, and so on down to F = 0.0. Some schools use a simpler unweighted scale without plus/minus increments.
