How the calculation works

The calculator subtracts your birth date from today's date, then adjusts the day and month components the same way you'd do it by hand: if today's day-of-month is earlier than your birth day-of-month, it "borrows" a month's worth of days from the month component, and if today's month is earlier than your birth month, it borrows a year.

Step-by-step example

If you were born on March 15, 2000 and today is August 2, 2026: years = 2026 − 2000 = 26, but since August comes after March, no adjustment is needed for the year. Months = 8 − 3 = 5. Days: since day 2 is earlier than day 15, we borrow — going back one month (July, 31 days) and calculating 2 + 31 − 15 = 18 days, while months drops to 4. Final result: 26 years, 4 months, 18 days.

Tips & common mistakes

• Manual age calculations often get the "borrowing" step wrong across month/year boundaries — this is the most error-prone part of doing it by hand.
• "Total days lived" is a fun number but note it includes leap days — someone born in a leap year on February 29th has technically had fewer actual birthdays than years passed.
• Time zones can shift "today's date" by a day right around midnight — if your age looks off by exactly one day, this is usually why.

Why exact age calculations are trickier than they look
